Green + Screen #5 installed!

(download)

There is finally a nice place to sit and eat a slice of Spak Brothers Pizza!  Yesterday, Green + Screen #5 was installed at the corner of Winebiddle and Penn Avenue.  This design, by far, has been the most complex, but it is also the most elegant and functional Green + Screen design on Penn Ave.   Architects, Rebecca Mizikar, Matt Zambelli, and Catherine Peek and designers Josh Lederer and Myles Geymen were the dedicated volunteers who help see this project to fruition since Spring of 2010. Jason Sauer from Most Wanted Fine Art also played a key role in much of the man power in getting the bench installed.

The inspiration for the bench design came from the oak slats that were purchased from Construction Junction.  With the help from students from Summit Academy, the slats were stripped and refinished to use for the outdoor bench design. A lot of time and planning went in to figure out how to create and build the undulating bench design. The bench is comprised of simple materials: re-purposed oak slates, off the shelf piping, and machined steel legs.   There will be a second piece of the bench constructed this summer that will wrap around the corner onto the Penn Ave side. Landscaping of this site was complete last fall with volunteers from eDG and Pittsburgh Cares.

A big thank you goes to everyone who helped with this project.  We hand many volunteers dedicating countless hours to make this Green + Screen happen.  It has been an incredible journey with an amazing outcome.

Here are a few pictures that recap the design process:

Help Re-Design a Rain Barrel!

Rain_barrel_w_diverter

StormWorks is a division of the Nine Mile RunWatershed Association (NMRWA).  They need design help with their current rain barrel design.  They are looking for ways they can create a more aesthetically pleasing rain barrel design without losing the functionality.  Also, there is concern how the barrels nest and ship when distributed in bulk.

Deliverables for this project would be conceptual designs, a final design, and CAD drawings that will be sent to the manufacture.

StormWorks plans to be delivering the new rain barrel designs in April 2012, so the span of the project will only be from Dec thru Jan.  This is a fantastic volunteer opportunity (and portfolio piece) for anyone interested in industrial design, engineering, landscape architecture, and/or environmental design.

If you’re interested in the project, please contact the ecoDesigners Guild at: ecodesignersguild@gmail.com  We will be taking interested volunteers for the project until December 14th.  The project will kick-off sometime between Dec 15th and 30th.

About StormWorks:

Green + Screen #4 Complete!

(download)
The fourth Green + Screen, PENNergetic, is complete!  The ecoDesigners Guild team who designed this were architects, Evaine Sing and Emily Rice, and designers Bill Bernstein and Minette Vaccariello.

The screen depicts a section of a map of Penn Ave from Gross Street to Fairmont.  At night there are solar lights that light up along Penn Ave on the screen.  It adds a nice warm glow to a once very dimly lit section of Penn Ave.  In the spring, there will be day lilly blooms, and honeysuckle vines that will climb on the back side of the fence.

Many thanks to the following groups, artists, and designers  who have helped make this project happen:
PAAI, BGC, FDA, URA, ecoDeisgners Guild, Alcoa, Bayer Material Science, Summit Academy43rd Street Concrete, Sestili Nursery, Most Wanted Fine Art, Yesco Schaedler, and Jason Sauer, Zach Beard, Acadia Klain, Satya Jeng, Rebecca Mizikar, Tom Robson, and many others!!
